As Kashmir approaches Independence Day, authorities have established multi-layered and robust security arrangements throughout the valley to ensure the smooth conduct of celebrations. This announcement came from V K Birdi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Kashmir, during a press briefing on Tuesday in Srinagar.
Birdi highlighted that the Jammu and Kashmir Police maintain a strong security presence not only in Srinagar but across all districts of the valley. He stated, “Multi-layered security arrangements are in place, not just at designated venues but also in surrounding areas to enhance the safety of the public.”
In response to inquiries regarding investigations into recent attacks in Anantnag and Pulwama, Birdi noted that investigations are ongoing. He mentioned, “It is ongoing, and it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to disclose specific details at this time. We will share clear information as soon as it’s available.”
Birdi encouraged citizens to join the Independence Day celebrations, emphasizing the communal aspect of the occasion. “This is a public function. The police only act as a facilitator. We urge people to participate in large numbers and contribute to the success of these events,” he said.
On Monday, a comprehensive security assessment took place, led by Birdi. The security review meeting included representatives from various agencies, such as the IG BSF and IG CRPF, alongside additional key personnel from local security forces.
During the meeting, senior officers briefed Birdi on the security measures implemented across the districts. Officers in charge of district police shared updates on preparations for Independence Day celebrations, aiming for thorough coordination in the event of potential security challenges.
Birdi urged officers to increase area domination and patrolling, especially in sensitive zones. “We must ensure that security checkpoints are fortified, particularly at vulnerable locations and during night hours along entry and exit routes,” he directed.
Notably, the main function will occur at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium. The IGP reiterated the importance of completing preparations ahead of time to guarantee a seamless experience during the celebrations.
Furthermore, he emphasized the need for heightened vigilance against entities that oppose the peace and security of the region. Birdi called for increased alertness across all jurisdictions to maintain public safety.
As part of these intensified security measures, police executed surprise checks and frisking operations in key areas, including Lal Chowk, to ensure preventive measures against potential threats.
With the backdrop of historical tensions, these preemptive security strategies reflect the authorities’ commitment to ensuring a peaceful and joyous Independence Day for all Kashmiris.
