Uttar Pradesh Home Department Delivers SIT Report on Ayodhya Theft

The Uttar Pradesh Home Department delivered the final report from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) concerning the alleged theft of donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir Teerth Kshetra Trust on Tuesday.

This significant update follows the state’s investigation into the alleged embezzlement of offerings at the temple. The Home Department has taken the necessary actions after receiving the report from the reconstituted SIT.

The new SIT, which included three senior IPS officers, was established to delve deeper into the reported multi-lakh rupee donation scam. Following the reconstitution, Inspector General Kiran S led the team, alongside Deputy Inspector General Ayodhya Somen Verma and Senior Superintendent of Police Ayodhya Dr Gaurav Grover.

Previously, the SIT featured Lucknow Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan Kumar. These changes aimed to enhance the transparency and efficacy of the investigation.

On Monday, the Supreme Court examined the status report submitted by the Uttar Pradesh government regarding the SIT’s progress on the inquiry into alleged financial irregularities involving the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The court emphasized that the detailed findings cannot be disclosed to petitioners or outsiders at this time.

However, the Court opened the floor for public-spirited persons to present suggestions about the investigation, which the Solicitor General will forward to the SIT.

This investigation into the alleged systematic theft of offerings has not only raised eyebrows regarding temple administration but also intensified political confrontations, particularly between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition. The allegations point to theft facilitated by temple staff and bank employees overseeing donations.

As investigations unfold, eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the case, including Avinash Shukla, Ankalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, and others, all of whom are currently in judicial remand.

The First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station on June 25 by Krishanmohan, a Trust member, alleged that staff responsible for counting offerings conspired to misappropriate funds, with further claims of systematic abuse.

This case has become a focal point for political discourse, with demands for greater accountability from various political factions. The ongoing scrutiny into donation management has brought serious concerns about transparency in religious institutions.

As the investigation continues, the SIT’s findings will potentially reshape discussions around accountability and governance within such revered institutions. With the pressure mounting from both the public and political spheres, the outcome of this inquiry may have lasting impacts on temple management and public trust.
