Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Wednesday, reflecting on the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, which he characterized as the dawn of a “decisive new chapter” for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Modi asserted that these regions have experienced significant development and social transformation since the revocation on August 5, 2019.
In a message shared on X, Modi emphasized, “Seven years ago, on this day, Articles 370 and 35(A) became history, marking a decisive new chapter in the journey of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh.” Following this constitutional change, the Centre reorganized Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Modi highlighted the extensive infrastructure expansion and increased opportunities in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and sports that have emerged in the aftermath of these changes. He stated that empowerment has reached women and marginalized communities, who were previously denied constitutional rights.
“Be it women or marginalized communities, those who were deprived of their basic constitutional rights for decades have now been empowered,” he commented.
He added that the seventh anniversary holds special importance as it coincides with the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, whose enduring commitment to national unity continues to inspire generations. Modi posited that Mookerjee’s vision found its “historic fulfilment” on August 5, 2019.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to advancing Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, insisting that all citizens should have the opportunity to play a part in building a developed India. “We reaffirm our commitment to the progress of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh and to ensure that every citizen has the opportunity to dream big and contribute to the making of a Viksit Bharat,” he said.
The government also showcased Srinagar’s international accolades for its crafts and heritage, along with a revival in festivals and cultural events, and a boost in pilgrimage tourism within the Union Territory.
Srinagar’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City and World Craft City has amplified Kashmir’s traditional craftsmanship on the world stage.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the decision made on August 5, 2019, regarding Article 370, deeming it a “golden day” in the chronicles of India’s unity, integrity, and sovereignty.
