Lok Sabha Adjourns Till Monday Amid Opposition Protests

The Lok Sabha adjourned on Friday amid escalating protests from the Opposition, who expressed their dissent over crucial issues such as the NEET paper leak and alleged theft of Ram temple donations. The session was marked by heated discussions and a lack of consensus between the government and opposition parties.

The House passed the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026 without any debate, a move that sparked further outcry from opposition lawmakers. They voiced their concerns during the session, demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the police’s heavy-handed actions during the recent student protests related to the NEET paper leak.

In response to the uproar, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju reinforced the government’s stance, stating that it was inappropriate for the Opposition to dictate which minister should address the House. He emphasized that Home Minister Shah consistently attends Parliament, often working late hours, and urged protesting members to cease their disruptive tactics.

Dilip Saikia, who presided over the session, attempted to restore order by asking members to return to their seats and cooperate. His appeals for harmony came amidst an atmosphere of tension.

“Please go to your seats. Please cooperate,” Saikia urged, as the protests and sloganeering intensified, making it impossible to continue the Zero Hour proceedings. Consequently, the House adjourned within just 16 minutes, marking yet another disruption in ongoing sessions.

The Monsoon session, which commenced on July 20, has faced several interruptions, largely due to the ongoing conflict between the ruling government and opposition parties. Earlier in the day, the Question Hour was also disrupted, as the House struggled to manage the vocal dissent of opposition leaders.

The consistent disruption of the Lok Sabha raises questions about the efficiency of parliamentary proceedings and the broader implications for legislative processes in India. Observers of the political landscape note that such confrontations often reflect deeper ideological divides between the Centre and the Opposition.

As India enters a crucial phase ahead of upcoming elections, the handling of these disputes during the Monsoon session may play a pivotal role in shaping public sentiment towards the government. How the ruling party navigates these challenges will significantly impact its standing with the electorate.
