Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Saturday. This meeting marked the beginning of the 18th BRICS Summit, taking place under India’s chairmanship.
As part of the summit, PM Modi extended a warm welcome to all BRICS leaders against the scenic backdrop of the famous Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. The choice of this iconic site underscores India’s cultural heritage while hosting global diplomacy.
On the previous day, PM Modi engaged in a series of critical diplomatic meetings. He met with Putin as well as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Additionally, he had discussions with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and addressed the BRICS Business Forum. These engagements demonstrate India’s proactive role in international relations as it guides discussions among this influential bloc.
The meeting with President Putin represented their second encounter of the year. Earlier, both leaders discussed bilateral relations during the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek in August. This ongoing dialogue highlights the strength and significance of India-Russia relations.
During their discussions, leaders reviewed ongoing cooperation across various domains including defense, energy, and economic partnerships, as described by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). They also addressed the critical themes of India’s BRICS chairmanship and the importance of India-Russia collaboration within multilateral frameworks.
Furthermore, topics concerning regional and global concerns were on the table. The conflicts in West Asia and the ongoing complexities in the Black Sea region took precedence during the dialogue. Such discussions reinforce BRICS’ commitment to addressing pressing global issues effectively.
Amid these talks, a significant breakthrough emerged: BRICS nations reached a consensus on issuing a Joint Statement during the summit. This step signifies strong collaboration within the group amidst various contentious points.
Extensive negotiations lasting until 4 am on Saturday paved the way for this consensus. Despite initial differences on several issues, India led focused consultations, striving to unite diverse stances and foster agreement among member states.
The collective agreement of the BRICS nations underlines the future potential of this bloc and showcases India’s diplomatic prowess. As global challenges evolve, the cohesion seen at this summit could influence broader geopolitical dynamics.
