At least 178 Indian nationals are among hundreds reported missing following devastating flash floods that struck Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) confirmed these figures on Thursday.
The floods severely impacted the regions of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha, wreaking havoc on infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and riverside settlements. Authorities continue search and rescue operations amidst ongoing concerns for those unaccounted.
In a recent update, the NTB noted that preliminary records from trekking and travel agencies identified a total of 644 missing travellers, among which are 127 Nepali nationals.
This concerning statistics includes 178 Indians, 53 Ukrainians, 35 Australians, and 25 Canadians, as well as individuals from several other countries. The NTB is actively verifying this data with travel agencies, guides, local authorities, and security agencies.
Moreover, sources from the Nepal Embassy revealed that 175 bodies have been recovered thus far, while a significant number of local residents and international tourists remain unaccounted. The embassy noted that around 476 individuals from 28 different countries have been reported missing, although these figures are subject to verification as rescue efforts continue.
Search and rescue operations have escalated, with numerous bridges and roads suffering extensive damage. Nepal’s security forces are deploying helicopters and ground teams to assist affected areas, providing medical aid, temporary shelters, food, potable water, and essential medicines.
Importantly, no adverse flood impacts have been reported in Indian border areas, according to National Disaster Response Force Inspector General Narendra Singh Bundela. Monitoring agencies have focused on water discharge levels in sensitive districts like Kushinagar and West Champaran, remaining on high alert.
In a show of solidarity, India has augmented its humanitarian assistance to Nepal. The Ministry of External Affairs reported that a second flight carrying 37.5 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, including medicines and food packets, has departed for the flood-hit region.
